The Continents

Do The Continents

Written in the 1990’s when I was running the music department at New Jersey’s Hoboken Charter School, my son and his friends were so bummed that they weren’t singing THE CONTINENTS as part of their curriculum at New York’s PS199 that I let them record a demo of it in my home studio:

Fast forward ten years to an afternoon at a public skating rink here in Manhattan where my son and those same friends were sharing the ice with a large group of young adults—coincidentally my former students from Hoboken: I didn’t recognize them as they were all over a foot taller, however they indeed remembered me and broke into song. Within moments, the rink was ringing with THE CONTINENTS. Everybody remembered every word.

I have earmarked THE CONTINENTS as a campaign for global animal awareness and wildlife preservation. I envision kids getting involved from the ground up, incorporating groups of children from all over singing the song as well as performing a CONTINENTS line dance. Moreover, there is amazing footage of animals “dancing” from various nature shows on PBS, Animal Planet, Discovery, etc. Hopefully the enthusiasm surrounding this project would generate willingness from the producers of those programs to share some of those gems for the video. The culmination: a documentary of the making of THE CONTINENTS, along the lines of the “We Are the World” video. THE CONTINENTS campaign would be produced as a telethon, co-led by celebrity kids, premiering the video on networks such as Disney, Nickelodeon, Animal Planet, ABC Family, etc., with kids at the phones taking pledges. Text pledges, mail-in donations, etc. would be a part of the campaign. All proceeds from pledges, video/documentary downloads and sales of the song would go to wildlife foundations.

If you are interested in helping to facilitate this project, please contact me through this website. Thank you so much. God bless you.

THE CONTINENTS

Here’s a song that takes us all around the world
Seven special places that we know
Something new to learn for every boy and girl
There are things each one has to show—sing it now!
AFRICA, AUSTRALIA, EUROPE AND ANTARCTICA NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA
AND ASIA MAKE A LOT OF SENSE
 WHEN YOU DO THE CONTINENTS
Africa has elephants and zebras, too
Antarctica—the penguins run the fair
Australia’s koalas and their kangaroo
South American birds fill the air—keep it goin’ now!
Horses, cattle, sheep of North America and Europe
Snakes and monkeys dance through Asia
Animals with confidence
 They all do the Continents!
We’re creatures of the earth—different shapes and sizes
Different kinds of skin, different noses, different eyes-s
Living off the continent chosen as our place
Everyone belongs—every breed and race
Mountains, alps, deserts and the deep blue sea
All the jungles, forests and the plains
Busy cities, quiet towns in harmony
Always changing, but what still remains—make it funky now!
AFRICA, AUSTRALIA, EUROPE AND ANTARCTICA NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA
AND ASIA MAKE A LOT OF SENSE
 WHEN YOU DO THE CONTINENTS
